If you’re driving in Norway, you will almost certainly encounter toll roads — and you’ll notice something unusual: there are no toll booths. Norway’s entire toll system is electronic. Cameras read your number plate as you drive through at normal speed, and you’re charged automatically.

How AutoPASS works

AutoPASS is Norway’s electronic toll system. Nordic residents typically have a transponder tag linked to an account. For foreign visitors:

  • Your plate is photographed at each toll point
  • An invoice is sent via your rental company or an international collection agency
  • No registration required — it happens automatically

Rental companies pass toll charges to you, often with an administrative fee. Some offer an optional AutoPASS tag for a daily rate, which can be cheaper if you’re driving extensively.

How much do tolls cost?

Costs vary by location and vehicle:

  • Urban toll rings (Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger): NOK 20–75 per passage, depending on time of day
  • Bridge and tunnel tolls: NOK 50–300+
  • Road project tolls: Variable

Rush-hour pricing is common — driving outside peak hours saves money.

EV discounts

EVs pay a reduced rate — currently capped at 70% of normal. Some toll roads offer larger discounts. The rules continue to evolve as EV adoption increases.

Where to expect tolls

  • Around major cities — urban toll rings in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim
  • Major road projects — tunnels, bridges, and highway upgrades
  • Some ferries — also accept AutoPASS

Blue AutoPASS signs appear as you approach, but there’s nothing you need to do — just drive through.

Practical tips

  • Budget for tolls. A driving holiday can easily accumulate NOK 500–1,500+ in charges.
  • Check your rental agreement for how toll charges are handled.
  • Time your city driving — urban tolls are often cheaper outside rush hours.
  • Don’t ignore invoices. Unpaid tolls are collected internationally.

How Norway compares

🇬🇧 United Kingdom vs. Norway

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Very few toll roads (Dartford Crossing, M6 Toll). Most roads are free.

🇳🇴 Norway

Extensive toll system with hundreds of points nationwide. All electronic — no booths.

Key difference: Norway has far more tolls than the UK, but they're entirely automated. You never stop — cameras read your plate and you're invoiced.

🇺🇸 United States vs. Norway

🇺🇸 United States

Toll roads in many states (E-ZPass, SunPass). Some still have physical booths.

🇳🇴 Norway

All tolls electronic via AutoPASS. No booths, no cash. Foreign vehicles invoiced by post.

Key difference: Norway's system is entirely cashless and automated. Unlike US toll plazas, there's nothing to slow down for.
